"etymology_text": "Unknown. Schrijver considers both of these suggestions unconvincing:\n* The derivation from Proto-Indo-European *ǵers- (“to twist, plait”) (compare Ancient Greek γέρρον (gérrhon, “anything made of wickerwork”)) is semantically implausible.\n* The derivation from Proto-Celtic *gerxs-, related to Latin grex (“herd”) and Ancient Greek γέργερα (gérgera, “many things”), which requires “flock, drove” to be the oldest sense and “drive, thrust” to be derived from it, is complicated by the fact that those words themselves are of unclear origin. In addition, Old Irish graig (“horses”) and Welsh gre (“flock, herd”) are already cognates of the Latin.\n* There is a possible connection with Proto-Celtic *koros (“casting, throwing”), though the -rr would need an explanation. This would require either a Brythonic gemination/expressive development or some other derivative formation accounting for the difference.",
